Memorial Weekend

This weekend started on Wednesday for us. As part of our history/art lesson, the kids sculpted Minoan ships. We learned that the Minoans, because they lived on Crete, were safe-guarded by of their strong Navy. The Navy kept the Minoans from being attacked by pirates, which is always a good thing. The kids enjoyed their little project, and as you can see Hiram even made a 'mini' ship as well.

Thursday was Field Trip Day! We couldn't have picked a more beautiful day to cross the James River on the ferry. The sky was clear, and the breeze was cool. The kids enjoyed our journey. Our destination was Chippoke Farm and Forestry Museum. It is one of the few working plantations in existence. We were able to view a variety of livestock and the exhibit that showed antique farm equipment. One of the exhibits we enjoyed the most was the household exhibit. There was an old stove, and even an old Maytag washer (with a foot pump and a ringer.) It certainly made me appreciate our modern conveniences. The kids loved looking at the old scooters, strollers, and sewing machines. They thought that stuff was pretty cool. There was also the mansion, but it was closed the day we went. . . Just some advice if you'd like to go, go on Friday or Saturday, they actually have events on those days. After walking around, we went by the river to look for shark teeth. I think we found some, but I'm not sure. . .

On Saturday we headed out on a "sea voyage." We went on the Fort Wool/Naval Base Tour. It was so nice. We relaxed on the boat, and I didn't get sea sick so I was able to relax. We were able to see our area from the water, which gives you a very different perspective. It was cool to see some of the Naval vessels so close and also to sea the Point Comfort lighthouse. Dan always talks about the joy seeing the lighthouses bring, for him it means he's almost home. It was cool to see it from his frame of reference. We were also able to tour Fort Wool, which you can only access by boat. The kids had a little excitement because a small boat had sunk off of Fort Wool, so they were able to see the bow bobbing around in the water. They hoped the people were able to get off safely (being just a few feet from shore, I'm sure they were able to.) After our boat ride, we went home and relaxed, then headed out to Buckroe Beach for a dinner with our Ward Family. It was just an extremely fun day!

Today we headed up to Williamsburg to participate in the Wreath Laying Ceremony to commemorate our fallen soldiers. It was a great ceremony, and I appreciated the prayers that were offered during it. The Fife and Drum Corp sounded great and kids enjoyed the piccolos. My dad met us there and we walked around through the afternoon. We were able to view the Governor's Mansion, the Public Gaol (jail), and the Capitol Building, which I'd never been in before. It was cool to see the Governor's chamber, as it was very ornate. The kids had fun running through the maze, of course.

After leaving Williamsburg we headed over the Jamestown to view the glass making. Hiram really enjoyed this. He thought it was amazing! After a long day, the kids cooled off their feet before heading home. My Dad, as a treat, took us to dinner, so I wouldn't have to cook. That was a treat indeed! Thanks Dad for the fun day and dinner!
